Walking Holidays Spain

The countryside in the interior of Valencia is as varied as it is beautiful and this walking holidays Spain offer you the possibility of walking through some of the most typical Valencian scenery. Whilst there is a more outdoor character to this trip there is still time for you to see the cultural gems of the medieval town of Xativa. The walking on this tour is more demanding but we maintain a balance between exercise and relaxation by incorporating visits to wineries or monuments during the programme and giving you some free time. You will visit some amazing archaeological remains which are approximately 2500 years old fortified villages from pre-Roman times when the Ibero tribes lived in fragmented societies throughout the Spanish peninsula. They had an agricultural and war based society which combined amazing artisanal and musical abilities as well as deadly horsemanship and fighting skills.
This journey also offers the possibility of seeing more wildlife, especially birds. And of course, all this combined with great local Spanish food and wine. This trip is a good example of how our trips offer a different type of walking in Spain.

Very small, unique, independent hotels of character. 3 nights in Xativa and 2 nights in the countryside. Both hotels have comfortable modern double rooms with bathrooms. One of the hotels has  baths rather than showers in the bathroom.
N.B. Rooms are of the same quality but can be different in layout and style.

Visits include

The remains of two Ibero fortified mountain top towns, a winery, and a guided tour of medieval Xativa and its castle.

Walking

There are four different walks through a variety of local countryside including one in the vineyard area of Fontanares terminating in a visit and tasting at a small family run winery. The different routes pass through small canyons and hills/low mountains covered in a variety of flora (pine, olive and carob trees) as well through open plains. All ideal countryside for a variety of birds especially birds of prey (e.g. Peregrine Falcons, Booted, Short toed and Golden Eagles and Bonelli's Eagles with luck) and all in the spectacular backdrop of Spanish Mediterranean mountain countryside. Whilst the walks are a little more challenging than the walks on our other tours they are still relatively straightforward. They are between 2 to 5 hours long and although technically not demanding we recommend that you are a regular walker and that you have a good basic fitness (be used to walking 3 to 5 hours in one go(including rest and photo stops etc). The paths can be a little rough under foot so we recommend walking boots. As well as boots we recommend you bring daysack and appropriate clothing for the time of year.

Gastronomy

3 lunches ,1 picnic lunch and 3 evening meals in an interesting variety of restaurants/bars in order to try local dishes. Also includes 1 Picnic lunch. You will be free to explore the town of Xativa, its bars and restaurants and try out the local cuisine (you could try tapas or try one of the many paellas on offer) at your own pace for one lunchtime and two evening meals.
